This museum chronicles the history of the Herschel family – who were talented musicians as well as astronomers.

It was from the house that now contains the museum that William, in 1781, discovered the planet Uranus, using a telescope which he designed himself.

He became a leading figure in the field of telescope design, and his observations helped to double the known size of the solar system.

Patrick Moore has suggested that he was possibly the greatest astronomer that ever lived.
